Como muchos grandes descubrimientos que se han sucedido a lo largo de la historia de la humanidad y que la transformaron, se tuvieron que concitar una serie de casualidades para que determinados hallazgos científicos se consumaran.
Este es el caso protagonizada por el profesor Yen-Hsun Wu del Centro de Investigación en Ciencias Aplicadas (ARC), de la Academia Sínica, Taiwan. Que estando en su laboratorio tratando de encontrar una alternativa para desarrollar una iluminación de alta eficiencia.
Similar a la que ofrece la tecnología LED, pero sin recurrir a productos químicos tóxicos como el polvo de fósforo, cuya aplicación además encarece su fabricacion por resultar muy complicado su tratamiento. Encontró una forma de generar energía por medios sostenibles.
Que poseía la capacidad de iluminar con un potencia equivalente a una bombilla LED, este fenómeno conocido bioluminiscencia, consiste en la capacidad que poseen diferentes especies de seres vivos para generar luz.
Una de las muchas posibildades que se han planteado para aplicar los resultados del estudio, es la de modificar genéticamente las especies vegetales que reunan las condiciones óptimas para potenciar la bioluminiscencia. De esta forma se conseguiría desarrollar una fuente de origen renovable, con la que se reducirían las emisiones de CO2 a la atmósfera y que se intergraria como un elemento mas en el espacio publico.

The French start-up Glowee has presented the bioluminescent lighting project, following the agreement signed with the authorities of the city of Rambouillet. The town, located just over fifty kilometres from Paris, has announced a whole plan whereby all of its furniture is to be illuminated by bioluminescent lamps. The route plan distributed to the press specifies that the different phases of implementation of this new model will be completed in several stages between 2022 and 2023.
